Educational Background and Professional Experience

Ronald Tonui holds a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) from Kenyatta University and a Master of Education (M.Ed) from Moi University.

He taught Mathematics at Lelboinet Secondary School in Elgeyo Marakwet and later at Moi High School Kabarak, Nakuru.

He served as Deputy Principal at Amalo Secondary School in Nakuru.

Political and Unionism Background

Ronald Tonui served as the Pioneer Executive Secretary of KUPPET-Bomet Branch and later as Assistant National Treasurer in the KUPPET National Executive Board (NEB).

He is a seasoned leader, educationist, and trade unionist whose journey reflects courage, conviction, and unwavering dedication to service. He previously served as the Member of Parliament for Bomet Central Constituency for two consecutive terms (2013–2022), earning recognition as a people-centered and development-focused legislator.

Tonui made a deliberate return to the education sector, choosing to focus on uplifting teachers and strengthening union leadership. This transition underscored his deep-rooted belief that meaningful change begins at the grassroots.

Within the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET), Ronald Tonui has emerged as a transformative and reform-driven leader. He is widely regarded as the “Father of Team Reforms”, a movement that has reinvigorated the union by championing transparency, accountability, and member-first leadership.

His reform agenda, however, placed him at the center of a major institutional confrontation. He was controversially removed from his position as Assistant National Treasurer, in a move that drew widespread attention and debate within union circles.

Demonstrating resilience and faith in the rule of law, Tonui challenged the decision in court—and the expulsion was subsequently overturned, affirming his position and reinforcing his stance on justice and due process.

This defining episode elevated his standing as a fearless and principled reformer, willing to defend democratic ideals within union structures, even at great personal and professional risk.
